Safe Tea Campaign

Safe Tea Campaign: Helping to reduce the number of ‘scald injuries’ to young children

The ‘SafeTea’ campaign was launched on October 16th  2019 on social media, TV and radio, and aims to reduce hot drink scalds and improve first aid for children’s burns. The target audience is parents, grandparents and carers of children under 5 across the UK.

The ‘Safe Tea’ campaign states:

‘The British are great tea drinkers, but this social habit has one undesirable consequence – the scalding of young children with hot liquids, usually pulled down over themselves. Across the UK, 30 young children attend hospital every day for treatment of hot drink scalds’

The ‘Safe Tea’ campaign recognises that many of these injuries are preventable. Through sharing key information on safe practice of hot drinks around small children and first aid advice on what to do in the event of an accident, the campaign aims to tackle this problem and reduce the number of children being scalded by hot drinks.

SafeTea Ambassadors are organisations and groups who support the aims of the campaign and agree to disseminate information about SafeTea to their networks , promote campaign messages on social media and encourage individuals to get involved by become supporters.

Please visit the SafeTea website to see the resources available www.safetea.org.uk

SafeTea is a national evidence-based campaign targeting one of the commonest preventable injuries to young children- please get involved and make help a difference by becoming a SafeTea Ambassador.

A new guide to self-evaluation for care services

Self-evaluation for improvement – your guide

The Care Inspectorate have published a new guide to support all care services in undertaking self-evaluation.

This useful document provides clear guidance and information on topics such as:

  • What is self-evaluation?
  • How to use self-evaluation
  • Consulting with all service users
  • How to evaluate and know what you do well, identify how you know this and what/where to go next

The Care Inspectorate states:

“We support improvement and we want to empower services to evaluate their own performance. This guide helps services across all care settings understand how they can do that. We believe that self-evaluation can be a powerful tool to identify what’s working well and to identify and support improvement. We want all services to undertake self-evaluation. We see self-evaluation as a process that the care service leads on and it is for you to determine the frequency and focus of your self-evaluation” (page 2: Self-evaluation for improvement – your guide)

CALA’s #Openingdoors graduate wins award

Congratulations to #Openingdooors graduate Shona Beveridge for winning the HTSI 2019 Youth Volunteer of the Year award!

Shona continues to volunteer at our out of school clubs alongside volunteering at her local Rainbows and as speaker and influencer for the Niemann-Pick UK Charity.

Shona is passionate about volunteering, especially for the Niemann-Pick UK charity. Last year Shona spoke at the 2018 conference where she shared her story of her own diagnosis of Niemann-Pick Type C.

At the age of 15 Shona was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type C. This is a rare genetic condition that effects 1 in 110,000 people and which there is no current treatment or cure. Shona has courageously taken part in a medical trial for treatment which saw her travelling to Birmingham every fortnight for a spinal injection. However, this didn’t stop Shona completing her education at Millburn Academy, volunteering or achieving her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award last summer!

Shona doesn’t see her condition as a disadvantage, she sees it as an opportunity. “If I didn’t have Niemann-Pick Type C I wouldn’t have been able to take part in the Rickshaw Challenge”. The 2017 Rickshaw Challenge saw Shona and the team cycle 500 miles and raise over £5,000,000 for Children In Need!

Despite all of these incredible achievements Shona faces daily challenges as her mobility changes but she doesn’t let this stop her. When asked recently what she felt she was gaining by volunteering Shona said, “Volunteering has helped me grow in confidence, I’ve learned new things, met lots of new people, it’s made me feel useful and part of the community. I really love helping the children with their arts and crafts activities and organising games for them”. “Taking part in #Openingdoors helped me grow in confidence and I have built great relationships with all the children when I volunteer at the Out of School Club. Meeting regularly with Kirsty (Mentoring Support Officer) helped me to gain more skills and keep me on track! I have also completed online courses through CALA in Child Protection and Risk Assessment”.

We are all incredibly proud of Shona here at CALA and we are sure you will agree that she is truly an inspiration.

Young carers: seen, heard and supported e- learning modules

Connecting Young Carers work with 5 – 24-year olds who are in a caring role for a family member. They provide support, days out, fun opportunities and the chance to meet other young people in similar situations.

A survey carried out in Highland in 2017, estimated that 11.5% of young people were carrying out some sort of caring role. The actual number of young carers is suspected to be much higher as many young people are not being or wishing to be identified as having a caring role.

Connecting Young Carers (in collaboration with CALA) have developed an e-learning module to help raise awareness amongst professionals about the role of young carers, the challenges this can present for the young carers and ‘The Carers (Scotland) Act 2016’.

A young person’s version of the module is also available to be used by secondary aged pupils. This module can be accessed individually by young people or as part of a group to increase their awareness of young carers.

Both modules are a blend of media presentation (including short video clips, animations, useful handouts to download and interactive tasks – all designed to suit individual learning styles.

Connecting Young Carers are launching both modules on Friday, 6th September 2 – 3.30pm at Eden Court Theatre. Spaces are still available at the launch and can be booked at:
