Junior World team up with TerraCycle to help reduce plastic waste from bread bags and crisp packets

The following blog update comes from Jayne Macintosh at Junior World in Nairn:

Joining up with Terracycle at the end of last year we have been increasing our awareness of recycling and everyone has been participating with the Walkers Crisp Packet Initiative and we have so far collected over 1000 crisp packets.

Last week we were the first registered collection point in the Highlands for “bread bags” a new initiative set up by Hovis. We have joined forces with the local Co-op stores in Nairn, who have agreed to be collection points and we are excited to be organising recycling advisory afternoons at the local Co-op stores in the very near future.

All recycled produce will be sent to TerraCycle where eventually they will be transformed into benches, watering cans etc.

Junior World’s Zip Wire Challenge

On Saturday 23rd March, 5 staff from Junior World stepped out of their comfort zone and took part in a ‘Zip Wire Challenge’ to raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland. Centre Manager Jayne Macintosh was delighted when some of her team agreed to take part in the challenge alongside her and together successfully raised over £500.

Not only is this charity significant to Jayne personally, having lost her Dad two years ago to this crippling disease. Importantly, Junior World’s ongoing commitment to its Intergenerational Projects has further highlighted the challenges faced by individuals and their families coping with Alzheimer’s.

Although a bit chilly, the sun shone all day and a great day was had by all. We would like to thank everyone for their support and contributions. Junior World have raised funds and contributed to 4 charitable organisations this year and welcome any suggestions for future fundraising challenges.

“Food Matters” – A new resource from the Care Inspectorate (featuring Junior World)

Food Matters is a resource by the Care Inspectorate that highlights examples of good practice from across the ELC sector in relation to food and nutrition. The resource compliments NHS Health Scotland’s ‘Setting the Table‘, the nutritional guidance and food standards for the ELC sector.

You can view the resource on the Care Inspectorate website by clicking here.

The guidance features case studies from ELC settings across Scotland, including Junior World in Nairn.

Here’s an excerpt from the guidance, in which Jayne Macintosh, Junior World Manager, talks about their gardening project:

“Donations of seeds, bulbs and resources for the garden led to them growing produce. Children
delighted in growing their own strawberries and commented that they tasted better than any they had
eaten before. The gardening project expanded to include growing radishes, cucumbers, and tomatoes
as well as herbs and flowers. The children now take extra delight in ensuring that Jayne, the manager,
always has fresh flowers in her office. They also show their parents what they have been doing, taking
real pride in their achievements.”

Space Week at Junior World

The children and staff at Junior World in Nairn recently took part in ‘Space Week’, which ran from October 4th to October 10th. During Space Week, the children learnt all about space exploration, planets, Sputnik and other satellites. They also spent time learning about ways to care for the environment.

The week culminated with the centre teaming up with nearby Millbank Primary School, to create a ‘space selfie’.
