SSSC Registration & PRTL

Registration

All childcare workers should apply for SSSC registration within six months of taking up employment within the sector. For example the SSSC description for Registration for a Practitioner in a Daycare of Children Service is as follows:

A worker who identifies and meets the care, support and learning needs of children and contributes to the development and quality assurance of informal learning activities and/or curriculum. They may also be responsible for the supervision of other workers.

To register with the SSSC a childcare worker must satisfy the criteria for registration. This includes holding or agreeing to work towards the appropriate qualifications for the job they do. The main national qualifications are:

  • SCQ Social Services Children and young People (SCQF Level 7)
  • HNC Early Education and Childcare (SCQF Level 6)

However other qualifications are also accepted (see SSSC website for more information). If you do not meet the qualification criteria you will be registered with a condition on your registration but will have the first period of registration to gain this qualification.

When your qualification condition expires, SSSC will contact you to provide evidence that you have gained the qualification. You should then send SSSC a verified copy of the qualification gained. A person from your organisation who is approved by SSSC to countersign documents (a counter signatory) must see the original certificate and must sign the photocopy and print their name and job title.

If you have a condition on your registration and you do not understand it, please contact the Registration helpline on 01382 207101 or email: [email protected]

PRTL – Post Registration Training and Learning (PRTL)

Everyone registered with the SSSC has to meet post registration training and learning (PRTL) requirements and over your five year registration period you must complete 10 days or 60 hours. Undertaking PRTL, writing about it and submitting it to SSSC makes sure you continue to be suitable for registration.

What is PRTL and why is it important?

PRTL is about on-going learning and development. It’s important because it makes you take responsibility for your own learning and development. Maintaining and developing effective knowledge, skills and values will help you inform good practice when working with people who use social service and their families.

You can record your PRTL online at MY SSSC

Alternatively, you can complete your PRTL using this electronic Record of Achievement template.
