Meet Samantha – one of our Modern Apprentices

Skills Development Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship scheme provides individuals with the opportunity to secure industry recognised qualifications while earning a wage.

We are happy to be part of the Modern Apprenticeship scheme and we thought we’d introduce everyone to Samantha Fraser, our Modern Apprentice at Wimberley Estate Childcare Centre in Inverness, one of Care and Learning Alliance’s Managed Daycare Centres.

Formerly a pupil at Fortrose Academy on the Black Isle, Samantha joined the staff at Wimberley in February 2014. When she left school, she hadn’t decided what she wanted her career to be so when she saw CALA’s online advert for a Modern Apprenticeship she thought she would give it a go. She had previously looked after her aunt’s child and thought childcare might work for her.  Her interview went well, even though she was very nervous, and it was her very first interview since leaving school. She needn’t have worried. She got the job and a year and half later, she’s now a valued team member and the children love her! She works with the 3-5 age range.

Samantha is currently working towards the SVQ Social Services Children and Young People qualification (SCQF Level 7). Her HiMATS’ tutor, Shirley Wiseman, visits regularly to steer her through her studies. She hopes to be finished in mid November, ahead of her goal. Her supervisor at Wimberley, Jayne MacIntosh, has also been a great help.

Samantha has been successful in securing a full time Assistant Childcare Practitioner post within Wimberley Estate Childcare Centre.
