The health impacts of screen time

The amount of screen time children should be allowed has been a hotly debated subject in recent years. A recent study by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has examined some of the issues around screen time and gathered information from children and young people.

The question of ‘how much screen time is too much?‘ can depend on a variety of factors, such as whether it impacts a child’s sleep schedule, whether screen time interferes with a family’s plans, and what the child is playing or watching on the screen.

The report suggests parents should “negotiate screen time limits with their children based upon the needs of an individual child, the ways in which screens are used and the degree to which use of screens appears to displace (or not) physical and social activities and sleep“.
