CALA Early Learning & Childcare settings 

Who can have Funded Early Learning and Childcare?

The eligibility for entitlement to funded early learning and childcare (ELC) follows the same birth date bandings as school entry i.e. from 1 March to the end of February in any year. For 2024/2025 the eligibility dates for 3 and 4 year old’s to have funded places are as follows:

“5-year olds” – P1
Those born on or between
1 March 2019 – 29 February 2020 are eligible for P1 from August 2024
“Deferral” to P1
Those born on or between
Between 20 August 2019 and the end of February 2020 child is entitled to defer entry to primary school.
“4-year olds”- N5
Those born on or between
1 March 2020 – 28 February 2021 are eligible for a funded place from August 2024
“3-year olds” – N4
Those born on or between
1 March 2021 – 31 August 2021 will be eligible for a funded place from August 2024
1 September 2021 – 31 December 2021 will be eligible for a funded place from January 2025
1 January 2022– 28 February 2022 will be eligible for a funded place from April 2025
“2-year olds”
Those born on or between
Subject to eligibility & availability
1 March 2022 – 31 August 2022 will be eligible for a funded place from August 2024
1 September 2022 – 31 December 2022 will be eligible for a funded place from January 2025
1 January 2023 – 28 February 2023 will be eligible for a funded place from April 2025

Eligible two-year-olds

Those from households in receipt of certain benefits, children who are looked after or the subject of kinship care or guardianship order, can take up their funded place at a partner setting or childminder.
