Welcome!

Our theme, ‘Nourishing Roots,’ invites us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the fundamental elements of meeting children’s needs. Since the introduction of 1140 hours in the wake of the pandemic, the childcare sector has been evolving rapidly. This conference offers delegates a valuable opportunity to step back, engage with our lineup of inspirational speakers, and explore the impact of child development knowledge when effectively applied in practice—strengthening our rights-based approach in childcare.

Alongside our thought-provoking speakers, you’ll have the chance to share experiences, showcase best practices, collaborate, learn, and be inspired. Expect a dynamic and engaging atmosphere where ideas flourish and connections are made—all while having fun!

Presentation title: ‘The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock’

James’ ‘happy place’ at work is the Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) setting. In deciding the title for his presentation, The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock, James drew on his experience as Quality Improvement Officer for the Northern Alliance where he led the development of Emerging Literacy in ELC settings and schools across the north of Scotland. This role confirmed the need for firm foundations in the early years, for the now and for the future.

Currently the head teacher of Cawdor Early Learning and Childcare and Cawdor Primary School, and co-author of the recently published book, ‘Emerging Literacy: Unlocking Instruction for Every Child’, James’ presentation will explore early literacy and mathematics, reflecting on how Cawdor weave together theory, the environment, the role of the adult, the curriculum, National expectations, and documenting children’s learning, to develop an approach which is improving children’s development, learning, and wellbeing.
